Northmont Board of Education Names Eric Hughes as Next Superintendent

The Northmont City Schools Board of Education has officially named Eric Hughes as the district’s next Superintendent.

Board President Linda Blum shared that the superintendent search was a thorough and intentional process centered on what matters most — students.

“This search has been a daunting task to design and implement, but I can say without hesitation that the process was guided by our shared commitment to find the right leader for our students, staff, and community,” said Blum. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my fellow board members for their dedication, collaboration, and countless hours of work throughout this search. Your focus never wavered from what matters most — doing what is best for our students.”

Blum also thanked those who supported the process behind the scenes and the many stakeholders who participated.

“I am also grateful to those who worked closely with me behind the scenes to ensure a thorough and inclusive selection process. Your time, care, and dedication mean more than I can express. Thank you to the members of our district leadership and the many teachers, staff, parents, students, and community members who participated in the listening sessions, completed surveys, shared your insights, and spoke so passionately about your work. Your commitment to excellence and to the success of every student is inspiring. Your voices played an essential role in shaping this decision.”

The Board expressed confidence in Hughes’ ability to lead Northmont forward.

“We are confident our next superintendent brings the experience, vision, and heart necessary to lead our district forward. We are excited about the future and the opportunities ahead under his leadership.”

Hughes brings 20 years of educational experience to the role, including the past three years serving as Superintendent of Miami East Local Schools, where the district earned five-star ratings on the state report card. As superintendent, he led the development of a five-year strategic plan in collaboration with board members, staff, students, parents, and community partners. His experience spans budgeting, human resources, curriculum, transportation, federal programs, union relations, and board governance.

Prior to his superintendency, Hughes served as Principal at Washington Primary School in Piqua and as Principal at Franklin Monroe Elementary, where his school consistently earned top ratings in Darke County. He also previously served as Assistant Principal at Northmont High School, where he oversaw student activities, coordinated state testing, and worked closely with staff to support students from kindergarten through graduation.

Hughes holds a Superintendent License from Miami University, a Master’s Degree in Instructional Leadership from Northern Kentucky University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Morehead State University. He was also named Northmont High School’s Employee of the Year during his previous tenure in the district.

Blum noted that Hughes’ connection to Northmont and his growth as a leader stood out throughout the process.

“Eric Hughes came to us prepared and with a strong desire to come back to the district where he enjoyed the culture of teamwork and collaboration. We were impressed by how he has grown and how much he has learned from his experiences after he left his assistant principal position here.”

She added:

“We believe in Eric. We have an instructional leader who will support and continue setting clear goals for curriculum and instruction while maintaining the high academic standards Northmont is known for. We have come to appreciate Eric’s strong communication skills and know he will interface with staff, parents, the community, and this Board of Education. He models high standards of integrity, is collaborative and empathetic toward student needs, and is skilled at building relationships and consensus among diverse groups. He has shared how he sees himself as very visible and engaged in our schools and community.”

Hughes shared in his letter of interest that his time at Northmont was invaluable and reinforced his belief in supporting the whole child. He expressed appreciation for the district’s strong leadership tradition, collaborative culture, and commitment to innovation.

With deep roots in the community and proven leadership experience, Eric Hughes will begin the next chapter of Northmont City Schools with a focus on academic excellence, communication, fiscal responsibility, and strong relationships across the district.

Northmont City Schools looks forward to welcoming Mr. Hughes back and continuing its tradition of excellence under his leadership.

This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication of Northmoor’s students, teachers, and families, as well as the school’s commitment to continuous improvement and academic excellence.

Student growth measures how much progress students make over a year's time, and this recognition highlights the incredible impact of Northmoor’s engaging instruction, supportive environment, and focus on individual student success.

Superintendent Tony Thomas shared, “This accomplishment is a testament to the hard work and teamwork happening every day at Northmoor. We’re proud of the entire Northmoor community for helping students reach their full potential.”
