2018 - 2019 One Call Now

November 28, 2018

Notification from: Northmont Central Office- District

Good afternoon,

Please find the Holiday Gift Shop schedule attached.

Holiday Gift Shop Schedule

Just a few reminders with winter upon us:

District policy is to have outside recess if the windchill is above 20 degrees. We do this for a few reasons, one to get the kids fresh air, research shows that getting outside, even in the cold, can have positive effects on attention span and memory performance.
Another is students do get a little stir crazy being inside all day, so having a change of pace of being outside in the daylight when we are at a point where there isn't much makes a difference for them for the rest of the school day.
With that please make sure students are prepared for the weather, I have a 6th grader and she knows more than me, but I do what I can to make her bring a heavy coat, but if she is not going to, she is going to be cold.
Also, please make sure you write your child's name on the tag of the coat or sweatshirt. I can't believe how much we get rid of every year. If we know who it belongs to we will make sure to get it back to you.
Recently 5th grade completed a PBL about plastic use and how much ends up in our waterways on the way to the ocean. It was pretty alarming.
With that being said we are trying to become more green by raising money as a school so we can switch to paper trays at lunch from styrofoam, and do a better job of recycling in the classroom.
We will be having fundraisers ( blow pop sale, and penny wars) to raise money to buy recycle bins for every class and to get enough to offset the cost difference from styrofoam to paper in the cafeteria. If your child comes home talking about it please consider supporting this great cause.

Thank you,

Joe Johnston

Good morning,

I hope everyone had a great break. Believe it or not we have 18 days of school left in the calendar year!

First and foremost our PTO meeting for tonight will be cancelled. Our next meeting will be January 22, the day after MLK day, which is a Tuesday.

If you are waiting on shirts still, I have been talking to our contact and he is still waiting on green sweatshirts. He has everything else and believes the green will come in soon. In the meantime he is going to get everything else printed. I am sorry for the delay on this.

Next week we will be having our holiday gift shop. We need help! We have all the kids coming down and really need help running the shop.

You can sign up through our Facebook Page, or through our school page

Please look for more info coming home today with your child.

This week we are collecting hats, gloves, socks and scarves for Community Table. Please consider supporting this cause all items stay local to help our community. Send in whatever you have with your child.

We also will be having our Spelling Bee coming up with the next 3 weeks. Please look for papers coming home.

Our talent show was fantastic! Thank you for helping your child practice and coming out and supporting if you were able to.

We have started doing our daily announcements digitally, students handle almost all aspects from hosting, to recording to graphics. (Adults still do the final edit before it is sent out). This is something that everyone seems to enjoy.

Have a great week!

Our unit we have been supporting will be done in January. The support you all have shown has been amazing, we would like to start to roll that generosity into supporting our VA right here. We will be partnering with the Earl Heck Center to support our local veterans.

Good morning,

Today for our late start teachers learned more about Nearpod and the "Question Formulation Technique". These are both things that add to student learning in significant ways, hopefully students are excited about their learning as they see this in action in the classroom.

Next week we have our Parent Teacher Conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday. PTO provides dinner for these two nights for the staff members, we are asking for your support with this. Kelly Paul has put together a sign up sheet, the links are below. Please help support us by volunteering to drop off something from the list for the dinners. There are two links because there are 2 nights.

Tuesday 10/23

Wednesday 10/24

Lastly, Our spirit wear order has been placed, however we had sweatshirts marked on the order, but they are actually hoodies, they are not sweatshirts without hoods.

If you ordered a sweatshirt thinking you were getting a crewneck please call the office so we can talk about our next steps.

If you are ok with a hoodie and thought it was one all along, you're good, do nothing, and enjoy your hoodie when it comes in, in a few weeks.

Really the last thing: If you did not know the middle school is having a multi-faceted safety drill today, do not be alarmed if you drive by and see police, fire, the local news out on National. This is all part of the district plan to practice and ensure student safety.

Have a great day!

Joe Johnston

Good afternoon EE families!

Our BBQ is coming up on Friday. We will have mums for sale! They look great and will be reasonably priced, all proceeds will support PTO. Also we should have samples of spirit wear shirts on display, and sign up for Watch DOG's as well. If you can't sign up on Friday an alternate date of September 18th from 5-6 up at the school is also an option.

A schedule was sent home last week if you need a time reply here and I am happy to share your child's lunch time.

We will also be burying our time capsules at lunch and we will have a fall magazine kickoff fundraiser with students at the end of the day on Friday. Look for more information on that to come home.

Below is a message for 6th grade parents:

Hello all 6th grade families. This past week, your student took part in our fall instrument try it event at the school. If you would like for your student to take part in the band/strings classes during the school day , these next bits of information should help. We have set up a parent letter on the district website that details that process along with steps to take for the future. We have also sent out an email with thorough explanation of how your student can take part in this new and wonderful, musical experience. This choice is up to you and your family and is not mandatory nor required. Classes will happen twice a week at each elementary school and this will begin tomorrow, September 11th. While the class is beginning on this date, students should be without instruments should still attend and should have an instrument by September 24th. We cannot wait to begin this great, new process for band and orchestra, and we look forward to seeing as many students that are able to join. If you have any questions, please reach out to mjohnston@northmontschools.net. Thank your for you time!

Have a great week!
